1 After the defeat at Perevolotjna on July 1, 1709, Charles XII fled to the Ottoman kingdom, where he was initially welcomed by the Turks and Sultan Ahmed III and, later, because of military spending and scheming at his host’s expense, put under house arrest. For five years, Charles XII sought to govern Sweden’s affair while still in exile.—Tr.

3 Trundle—a circular wheel-shaped piece of wood, 6 inches in diameter, thrown between two opponents. The thrower would use enough force to try and land the trundle past the goal line of the opposing party. The opponent would attempt to stop the momentum of the trundle with pokers and, if successful, would force the other party to withdraw to the line where the trundle landed. Primarily played on the roads.—Tr.

4 Used throughout Europe during the eighteenth century, based on a given silver content. CF. thaler.—Tr.

5 Felekarl, “fiddlefellow,” see fela, page 10. Karl from Old English carl, from Old Norse karl, man, carl—a man of the common people.—Tr.
